Manuscript to Performance: Materializing the Crusade Song

July 10-14, 2018

This course proposes the reconstruction of medieval music performance through a multidisciplinary approach that includes the fields of musicology, philology, history, religious studies, and art history. In the 2018 course students will reconstruct the music and performance of religious and secular music composed by clerics, troubadours, and trouvères in connection with the crusades. Open to musicians, musicologists, philologists, and medievalists.

Voices & Instruments: Chevaliers non estes guaritz

July 16-20, 2018

Study and hands-on performance of songs related to the crusades composed by clerics, troubadours, and trouvères. The study on performance is accompanied by music theory classes, exploration of historical vocal techniques, specialization on medieval musical instruments, detailed work with historical tuning (Pythagorean), and development of ensemble playing techniques. Open to singers and instrumentalists.

Workshops & Special Sessions

 

Musicorum Concio: Crusade Conductus and Rondellus from the Ms. Pluteo 29

July 21-22, 2018

Ensemble class for advance singers and instrumentalists to work on the most demanding repertoires of the period (maximum of 10 participants. Experience and audition required.

Workshop with Benjamin Bagby: Songs for and about Medieval Crusaders

July 7-8, 2018

Performance of Latin, French, Occitan, and High German crusader songs. Open to singers, and bowed and plucked string instrument players (maximum of 12 participants).

 

 

Chamber Music Sessions

July 15-20, 2018

Designed to give students the opportunity to work in detail with small groups of mixed voices and instruments. Taken as part of the Voices & Instruments Course.

Musical Pilgrimage Hike

July 15, 2018

Walk to the Romanesque shrines of Santa Maria and Sant Sepulcre de Palera near Besalú (places associated to the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem), historical and artistic presentation of the sites, and performance of music inside of the churches. Open to musicians, musicologists, and medievalists.
