Medieval pilgrimage was not only comprised of the long journeys to the important pilgrimage centers in Jerusalem, Rome and Compostela, it also involved short walks to local shrines. Good examples of such places are the eleventh-century churches of Santa Maria de Palera and the Benedictine Monastery of Sant Sepulcre de Palera located close to Besalú. Both places were connected to the Holy Sepulcre of Jerusalem and in them special dispensations were given to those who could not undertake the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
The Medieval Music Besalú course offers a musical-pilgrimage hike to the 11th-century churches of Santa Maria and the Monastery of Sant Sepulcre de Palera (4 km from Besalú, aprox. 1 hour walk each way).
The trip will be comprised of:
- Walk to the churches taking rural trails (4 km from Besalú to destinations).
- Explanation about the historical context and of the architectonic and artistic elements of each place.
- Study and performance with voices and instruments of two medieval compositions (a processional hymn and a Cantiga de Santa Maria) inside the temples.
- Return to Besalú by lunch time (4 km, approx. 1 hour walk).
